Standing on the eastern tip of the Island, the station has, since 1867, been responsible for around 2,000 rescues and the saving of many hundreds of lives at sea. The state-of-the-art station and lifeboats are a far cry from the early days, when the open lifeboats were powered by 10 oarsmen and launched off the beach from a carriage. “Tamar” class RNLB 16-17 Alfred Albert Williams is the eighth lifeboat to be stationed here, and is the most up-to-date currently in RNLI service. Visitors can inspect the lifeboat up close from the public viewing gallery. A lift provides disabled access to the gallery from the pier. Display panels and a video slide show give a graphic account of the lifeboat at Bembridge, along with the history of the RNLI lifeboat service since its origins in the 1820s. Daily, 11am-4pm (2pm-4pm during off-season).
